“Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανισμός και Επανεκτίμηση της Επιστημονικής Γνώσης”

Δύο παγκόσμιοι πόλεμοι, ο φόβος της πυρηνικής αποκάλυψης κατά τη διάρκεια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου και οι οικολογικές καταστροφές του τελευταίου τετάρτου του προηγούμενου αιώνα υπονόμευσαν την ελπίδα ότι τα επιτεύγματα της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας θα οδηγούσαν σε ένα ένδοξο μέλλον για την ανθρωπότητα. ‘Εχουμε ξεπεράσει τις απαιτήσεις του επιστημονικού θετικισμού ότι μόνο η επιστήμη μπορεί να ανοίξει την πόρτα σε γνήσια γνώση;
Έμπειροι εκπρόσωποι από την πλευρά της επιστήμης συνεχίζουν να κηρύττουν ένα “ευαγγέλιο της επιστήμης” που είναι αγκυροβολημένο στον υλισμό και στον επεξηγηματικό αναγωγισμό. Ωστόσο, άλλες φωνές, μέσα και έξω από την επιστήμη, απαιτούν μια σοβαρή επανεξέταση της προσέγγισής μας στην επιστημονική γνώση και την ανθρώπινη πρόοδο. Ρωτούν αν υπάρχει μια καθολική έννοια της επιστήμης ή διάφορα ανταγωνιστικά μοντέλα της επιστήμης. Ζητούν διαφορετικές αντιλήψεις για την επιστήμη, τη φύση και το μυαλό, που ξεπερνούν τον επεξηγηματικό αναγωγισμό και παρέχουν ένα χώρο για το θαύμα και μια θεία παρουσία στον κόσμο. Αναρωτιούνται γιατί τα επιστημονικά ευρήματα είναι συχνά τόσο ανοίκεια σχετικά με τις ανθρώπινες προσδοκίες.
Ο Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανισμός μπορεί να έχει πολλά να προσφέρει σε αυτά τα θέματα και η Δεύτερη Διεθνής Διάσκεψη της SOW (Science and Orthodoxy around the World, Ορθοδοξία και Επιστήμη σε όλο τον Κόσμο) θα εξετάσει πώς μια χαρακτηριστική Ορθόδοξη προσέγγιση μπορεί να συμβάλει στην επανεκτίμηση της επιστημονικής γνώσης και να ενισχύσει τη συζήτηση μεταξύ επιστήμης και θρησκείας.
Μεταξύ των διαφόρων θεμάτων που θα συζητηθούν είναι τα εξής:
• Ποια είναι τα σημερινά εννοιολογικά θεμέλια της σύγχρονης επιστήμης και του Ορθοδόξου Χριστιανισμού; Πώς διαφέρουν; Είναι συμβατά με κάθε νόημα;
• Τι μπορεί να συμβάλει ο Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανισμός στη σύγχρονη επανεκτίμηση της επιστημονικής γνώσης;
• Μπορούμε να προτείνουμε μοντέλα επιστήμης που να αποδίδουν το αξιοσημείωτο φόρο τιμής στην τεράστια επεξηγηματική δύναμη της επιστήμης αποφεύγοντας παράλληλα τις υπερβολές του scientism και του αναγωγισμού;
• Ποια είναι η σύγχρονη ορθόδοξη στάση όσον αφορά τις ηθικές και δεοντολογικές πτυχές της επιστήμης και τη χειραγώγηση της φύσης και της ανθρωπότητας;
Διάφοροι διακεκριμένοι επιστήμονες, θεολόγοι, ιστορικοί, φιλόσοφοι και στοχαστές από διαφορετικές χώρες συναθροίζονται στην Αθήνα για έναν ζωντανό και γόνιμο διάλογο μεταξύ των εκφραστών διαφόρων απόψεων.
